About me

Registered Biokineticist

Seugnette Pretorius completed her BCom Sport Management at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) in 2011. This was followed by a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education as well as a BCom Honours in Sport Management in 2012 and 2013, respectively.

During 2014, she completed her Honours in Biokinetics. Since then she has worked in private practice and started her own practice in 2020. Seugnette is also a certified pilates instructor and understands the value that both Pilates and Biokinetics have in the rehabilitation process. She has a special interest in the functioning of the human body as a kinetic chain, and how an injury can cause compensation in different muscle groups. She strives to enhance the quality of life of all her patients by explaining the importance of being physically active.

In her free time Seugnette loves running after her toddler, participating in rebound classes and being active outdoors with friends and family. A good book and a strong cup of coffee are what fills her batteries.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Biokinetics?

Biokinetics is the profession concerned with health promotion, the maintenance of physical abilities and final phase rehabilitation, by means of scientifically based physical activity program prescription.

What is the difference between a biokineticist and a physiotherapist?

Physiotherapists are treating acute injuries and focus on the first phase of the rehabilitation process. A physiotherapist will refer to a biokineticist once the patient is done with the initial rehabilitation phase.

A biokineticist usually treats the cause of the injury and a physiotherapist will treat the symptoms of the injury.  Biokineticists are responsible for the final phase rehabilitation and to get the patient back to their sport or daily activities.

They both have crucial parts to play in the patient’s recovery process.

Can I claim the sessions back from my medical aid?

Yes, you can claim your biokinetics session fees back from your medical aid. Always check with your medical aid first to see how much they will cover for your sessions.

Who needs to see a biokineticist?

Biokineticists treat everything from orthopaedic injuries and chronic conditions right through to special populations and so much more.  Biokineticists can treat any age population. Every person can benefit from biokinetics.

Is Biokinetics a medical profession?

Yes, to be able to practice as a biokineticist you should belong to the Health Professions Council of South Africa. Biokineticists work closely with doctors, physiotherapists and other medical professionals to enhance the patient’s overall well-being.

What degree should you have to practice as a biokineticist?

In order to become a biokineticist, you need to obtain an undergraduate university degree in Human Movement Studies with honours in Biokinetics.

After your honour’s year, you are required to complete one year of internship, before you can register as a biokineticist with the HPCSA. Some universities have recently changed the degree to a 4-year Biokinetics degree.
